Just in case anyone is still a bit confused by the handicap adjustments, for this time only, the following is an explanation of how it all worked at Onneley in April 2010.
Following the game the spreadsheet calculated the target score as 38 points.
A buffer zone was created below 38 points, the size of which is dependant on an individual’s current handicap (see table below). The following players scores fell within the buffer zone, and therefore no handicap adjustment was made:
o Kevin Abell
o Jon Downs
o Richard Meadowcroft
o Steve Ruddell
o Stephen Rushton
o John Smith
o Phil Smith
o Philip Stonier
The following players scored below the buffer zone, and therefore all of these players had 0.6 added to there handicap:
o Andrew Abell
o Barry Brereton
o Brian Copestick
o Karl Furniss
o Philip Greatbatch
o Stan Malpass
o Darren Matthews
o Joe Matthews
o Peter Simms
o Leslie Smith
Due to the “rounding” of actual handicaps to create a “playing handicap”, all but two of these players received one shot to the playing handicap. Although Karl & Les received 0.6, this did not affect their playing handicap. Example:
Pre-game….Player’s handicap = 17.6; Playing handicap is rounded up to 18.
Post-game...Player received 0.6 = 18.2; Playing handicap is rounded down to 18.
Kev Sherwin was the only player to better the target score (by 3 shots). His handicap lies in category 4, and therefore Kev was deducted 3 x 0.4 = 1.2 shots.
Due to the “rounding” of actual handicaps, his playing handicap was reduced by 2 shots.
The following players did not play and were therefore deducted 0.3 shots.
o Brian Abell
o Graham Cooke
o Edmund Green
o Russell Howard
o Peter Meadowcroft
Due to rounding, only Peter suffered a reduction in playing handicap.
