Congratulations to Karl Furniss on winning both the Stableford and Strokeplay Competitions on this years  Tour to Llandudno in North Wales. We were not to be disappointed enjoying great weather and playing three excellent courses with Karl producing some superb golf achieving a Tour Record 125 Stableford Points over the three games. It was just a fabulous weekend for Karl and all of us.

On Friday we headed off to North Wales Golf Club ready for a 1.00pm tee-off. On arrival we found a “Stokie” behind the bar, born  and bred in Longton, who was quick to remark that we had not brought any Oatcakes with us - still we will know next time. The course was in great condition with great views overlooking the sea - oh and the “joggers!!”, what more could we ask for!

The two team captains for the Captains Cup announced their pairings and all appeared to be going well. Little did the “Old Un’s” know that at dinner later in the evening, it was to be announced that there was a “Judas” amongst them!!! Someone who offered up little hope for the success of his team. Still life goes...it’s only a game.
On to the golf - and what a performance from Karl who started the weekend playing off an handicap of 20 and  dropping a further 4 Shots  over the weekend. Anyway, 46 Stableford points from 81 gross strokes just about says it all. In second place came Kevin Sherwin with 41 points from 90 strokes and in third came Russ Howard and Kevin Abell. Longest Drive on the day went to Jon Downs and Nearest the Pin went to Joe Matthews. Piggin Awful prize went to our Captain Andrew Abell with 21 points. The Oscar for the Best Actor went to Steve Ruddell for his part in the “Horrors of the 15th fairway”. Had us all worried at first Mr Ruddell - a lump appeared the size of a golf ball - I wondered where they got that saying from - now I know. From then on in, Steve went very quiet (surprisingly!) and his golf seemed to improve and finished off with a great birdie on the last hole!

The results of the Captains Cup were pretty close with the Young Guns just edging it by 3½ points to 2½ points. A great days golf and a really good opener to our Tour.

On to Rhos-on-Sea on Saturday morning all dressed up in our “Ian Poulter / John Daley” outfits. Some strange looks from the members but everyone seemed to enjoy the idea. So much so that we had a professional photographer following us on the course taking photographs of us all for the Rhos-on-Sea Golf Club website. Tried to buy the photos  but he wanted a hundred pounds and alas that was too much for our Society Funds. Andrew has since commented that he did not charge him any “modelling fees!!!” - beginning to wonder about Andrew??

The golf course was in very good condition, good open fairways with plenty of ditches and plantations to avoid - a real test. It was Richard Meadowcroft who ran out the Days Winner wearing his multi-coloured, flowery, patterned golf trousers which he had bought a week earlier and shipped in all the way from the USA.  Obviously Richard was inspired by his golf wear and came in with 44 Stableford Points from 82 shots. The rest of his four ball had migraines after a couple of holes!!!. Well done Richard a good game of golf. In second spot came Karl with another great score of 43 points which put him into a very strong position going into the last day with a 12 Point lead over his nearest challenger Richard Meadowcroft, In third place came Steve Ruddell with 41 points, his golf obviously much improved following the bang on the head from the previous day. Longest Drive went to Karl Furniss and the Nearest the Pin was won by John Smith. Piggin Awful Prize was picked up by last years Tour Champion Ed Green with 26 points.

The Captains Cup, well what more can we say. The Young Guns just edging out the Old Un’s in some very good and very tight matches (the pen is mightier than any golf club!!). Young Guns Captain Steve “The Governor” Rushton appeared to be very upbeat about the days results which made it 9½ points to 2½ points in favour of the Young Guns. Steve started celebrating his teams performance almost immediately  and in reality for the rest of the weekend. His golf went pear shaped!.Drinking in the bar at Rhos on Sea Golf Club which was later followed by several more bars in Llandudno late into the evening. It just had to end in tears....and it did, with “The Governor” putterless on the first green at Abergele...it was left in the boot of the car....then he found the key to his Hotel Room in his pocket....which earned him a trip back to the Hotel in Llandudno. God, what a mess - then he shot 111 and
scored 25 points at Abergele. Didn’t finish there, word has it he went to work the following morning pulled up in the car park and fell asleep still clutching the “Captains Cup” !!!! Ahhh...but it was a great weekend. His rooming partner for the weekend was also in a poor state on Sunday morning - the “Old Un’s” Captain Kevin Abell. Once again Kevin started the weekend well with a good score on Friday but once Steve got him to the bar, all was lost, and his chances of making the Order of Merit Titles for 2010 his own were gone. Biggest surprise of the weekend was that they both managed breakfast on the Sunday morning!

At Dinner on Saturday it was decided that the prize for the best dressed  “Ian Poulter / John Daley” outfit should be shared between Richard Meadowcroft and Russ Howard. Richard really does look like John Daley on one of the photographs!

Our thanks must go to Pete Meadowcroft (Fine Master for the weekend) who did a splendid job in keeping everyone in order. Just one night was devoted to giving out fines and raised twenty five pounds. It is understood that there is a “roll over” of fines that will be divulged on the first night of next years tour. Fines have been given following some very serious misdemeanours at Abergele!!!. We must remind Young Gun’s Captain Steve “The Governor” Rushton to bring along his credit card on next years tour!

Anyway, back to the Golf. Abergele - what a fabulous course, what a superb club house and such good hospitality.  What more can we say other than we must go back next year. The views on the course, with the back drop of the castle, were just breath taking. A course we would all enjoy visiting again.  So, who won on the day? It was Les Smith with 38 points from 90 strokes who mastered the course better than anyone else on the day. Good days golf Les and well played - it pays to stay off the hard stuff the night before. Never seen Les so sober on a Sunday morning of a “PIGS Tour” before!. In second place came Russ Howard with 36 points. Russ had a great weekend and playing really well to his handicap. Russ also won the Nearest the Pin with a lovely shot that came just a couple of yards short of the pin. Russ also came second overall in the Stableford Competition - great game Russ. In third spot on 36 points came a group of Karl Furniss, Joe Matthews and Stan Malpass. Great game guys. Longest Drive at Abergele was won by John Smith and the Piggin Awful Prize was won by Brian Abell.

The results of the Captains Cup on the day was yet another close match  with six points each and therefore the Days Match halved but the Young Guns running out overall winners, by a short head, and won 15½ points to 8½ points.

Thanks to Steve Rushton and to Tom for introducing the “Trotter Trophy” for the overall Piggin Awful Trophy which was presented by Steve Rushton and was awarded to Brian Copestick who was well supported by the other half of the comedy act in Joe Matthews.

Thanks to Brian Abell on raising forty pounds from the “betting book” which will help Society Funds.

The weekend was enjoyed by all of us but we must not forget the work that Andrew did all over the weekend in feeding his laptop with scorecards.  Excellent job Andrew and well appreciated by all of us. A really great job as Captain. Cheers mate.

Finally, great company guys a pleasure to spend the weekend with you all. Look forward to next year.
