Congratulations to Phil Smith and John Smith on winning this years Order of Merit Competitions. A year that has seen some outstanding golf played by our members in which we have seen 12 different winners. We have visited new courses and some old favourites and have been very lucky to have picked days when the weather has been kind to us. The scenery on some of the courses has been breathtaking and in some cases well worth the extra cost in green fees to play courses of such a high standard all adding to our enjoyment. Our best golfer has to be Phil Smith who played 9 events and ran away with the Strokeplay Order of Merit whilst playing some exquisite golf with his best round, and possibly his round of the year, coming at Rhuddlan Golf Club on the opening day of our Welsh Tour when he shot a 6 over par 77 to score 42 Stableford Points off an handicap of 11. The Stableford Order of Merit was a totally different ball game with no individual making a significant move to establish a runaway lead. Kevin Abell started the season in fine form and after a few society days it looked as though he may walk away with it, but, as we all know, golf is not like that, form is temporary and over recent weeks it deserted him to leave the door open for everyone else. Coming to the last Society Day of the year at Newcastle there were half a dozen members in the frame and it all came down to who had the best game on the day. Daz Matthews, Kevin Abell and Russ Howard were the favourites to do well but it was John Smith who grasped the opportunity and scored 36 points from 94 strokes to clinch the Order of Merit by two points from runner up Russ Howard. The most improved golfer this year has to be Russ Howard who had an outstanding few days in Llandudno when he won the Tour Championship and ended the season losing 5 shots off his handicap. The only other significant handicap mover was Andrew who also lost 5 shots over the year.
The Society enjoyed its best year so far. Twelve events on some great courses with twelve different winners. A great tour to Llandudno with 24 members all competing to become Tour Champion. It was a great year, thoroughly enjoyable and good company. Well done guys it has been a real pleasure for all of us and now back to planning for 2012. Some changes to be made to keep you all fresh and eager to play this great but most frustrating game.
