Phil Stonier wins the
 “12,000 Miles Trophy”
 by a distance
This was our first Society visit to Alsager Golf Club and we were certainly not disappointed in what we found in this South Cheshire village and so close to home for many of our members. The early evening start at 4.15pm was again a stroke of luck. The sky had been delivering showers all day and the prospects for us enjoying a round of golf on a glorious summers evening looked very bleak in deed. However, right on cue,  as we strolled down to the first tee, the sun poked through the clouds and stayed with us for the rest of the evening. A beautiful evening for playing golf and the views from the 14th and the 16th tee - well, just breathtaking, must be the envy of every golf club - the walk was tough but well worth it.

Well the sun was certainly shining on Phil Stonier (22 h’cap)) who started the round at a blistering pace. Carding 41 points from 87 strokes and opening with a lovely par on the first hole with a shot that was five feet from the pin. He then went on to drop just 3 shots over the next six holes . The first nine holes earned 22 points and put him in a strong position to put together a good stableford score. Phil said “It really helped having two Alsager members playing in my group. So, I just watched where they were hitting the ball and the clubs they were using and did likewise. They were great company, we all had a laugh and come what may, I was going to enjoy my golf.  As it happened, everything worked and my highest score was one seven on the par 5 17th hole. Yep, starting to really enjoy my golf again”.

The Society Day at Alsager had been organised by Karl Furniss, who had donated the Trophy in memory of his father Peter who sadly passed away early this year. So, a big thank you to Karl and his family and especially to Sharon and Dot who looked after us all with drinks and chocolate at the halfway house. The reason it is called the “12,000 Miles Trophy - UK & NZ”  is that Karl’s brother lives in New Zealand and is organising a similar golf event at his local course. We also had a raffle after the game and this raised the sum of £70 with further donations from Joe Matthews and Peter Meadowcroft to be added. Cheers everyone, feel sure that Karl and his family will be happy with this. All the money going to Christies.

So what else happened with the golf. Not much I can hear a lot of you say. In second place and with his best ever round of golf with the Society came Mel Clewlow (28) with 36 points from 98 strokes and playing his first game of golf for several weeks following a knee operation. Good steady round of golf with no disasters and no blobs on the card. However, he had to wait until the very tough last hole for his first and only par.

In third place came Daz Matthews (21) with 33 points from 94 strokes. Another good round of golf from Daz who is beginning to put together a run of good games. This result  puts Daz at the top of the Stableford Order of Merit  which he now leads by 2 points from Kevin Abell who has been sitting on top of the table all year. So, well done Daz keep it up and let’s see if you can build on this ready for  Wales - either on the practice range or in the bar -  probably think the bar will get the nod!!

In fourth spot came Russ Howard (30) with 34 points from 102 strokes. A great chip in on the first hole for a birdie two got Russ up and running on his way to a great front nine of 20 points. But two sevens and an eight on the back nine cost him a higher finish. Picture on the right shows Russ after his chip in - no wonder he looks sheepish!!

In fifth place came Steve Rushton (25) with 30 points from 102 strokes. Hopefully, finding his way again with his golf after a lean few outings with the Society. Fifteen points in each half suggests a steady round of golf.

In sixth place came Richard Meadowcroft (18) with 30 points from 96 strokes. A couple of high scoring holes did the damage on the back nine holes. Good front nine with 20 points from 41 strokes.  In seventh spot came John Smith (22) with 28 points from 100 strokes.

In eighth place came Phil Greatbatch (27) with 28 points from 104 strokes. A course that some would think should suite Phil’s game but not on this night. In ninth place came Karl Furniss (18) with 27 points from 97 strokes.  The hassle of organising the evening, prizes, drinks, halfway house, signing people in, organising his member guests, trophies etc, etc was perhaps, too much for his golf.  Before the game looking a good bet to do well on his home course. Still, for Karl and his family, the night  was not about his golf but the memory of his father. However, Karl salvaged something from the golf with a great shot on the 149 yard 9th hole to win the Nearest the Pin Trophy - well done Karl.

In tenth place came Kevin Abell (17) with 26 points from 98 strokes. Having a mini crisis with his irons and short game at the moment but will come through ready to compete in Wales. His dip in form  means that he has lost the leadership of the Order of Merit, a position he has held all year.

A big thank you to all the guests that played in all of our groups and helped us to pay a reduced green fee as well as giving us all tips on where and how to play our shots. It was Peter Isherwood (15) that led the way for the guests with 37 points from 84 strokes. Looked like he had a good game with two blobs on his card. Paul Herrington (19) came in with 36 points from 95 strokes. If the end of his front nine had been anything like his back nine where he amassed 22 points, then he would have romped home, but that’s golf, if’s and buts and may be’s.

John Munn (16) who played with us at Trentham Park came in with 34 points from 88 strokes. Mike Pumford (9) had 33 points from 82 strokes and John Ashurst (14) had 33 points from 87 strokes and also took away the overall Longest Drive Trophy which he won on the 17th hole - 270 yards - a great shot.
Andy Prince (19) had 33 points from 92 strokes and finally Ian smith (19) 27 points from 98 strokes.

It was yet another fabulous day out for the Society. A course that was very hard for those that had not played it before. Plenty of trees, bushes, trenches and water to negotiate. If you did not find the fairway, more often than not, you were punished. Great test of your golfing skills - some were luckier than others.

The hospitality in the clubhouse and the food were excellent and a course we would visit again.

Well done everyone - see you all at Gorstyhill Golf Club for the “Gorstyhill Classic” game on Friday 19th August at 1pm.  Don’t forget!
